Few things render delighted gasps like a perfectly baked dessert – especially if it’s one from Bake: Dessert. The family-run bakery’s signature offerings look gourmet but taste unmistakably homemade, making it impossible to tell that they came out of a box and not a loved one’s oven.

No one expects to bite into the crunchy meringue discretely layered between the rich, moist Old Fashioned Chocolate Cake, with a hint of orange essence and smothered in chocolate butter cream icing. It’s the sworn favourite of many a discerning chocolate lover.

Chunks of white chocolate, almonds and soft, dried fruit are mixed into the batter of the White Chocolate Cranberry Biscottis, keeping the twice-baked biscuit moist and flavourful on the inside.

Molasses Ginger Cookies, too, are crisp on the outside but chewy soft on the inside, the cookie spiced with cloves, ginger and cinnamon.

It is a passionate love affair with baking shared by a mother and daughter team. Lynda Stoller and her daughter, Karen West, the force behind Bake: Dessert, use original family recipes, carefully honed by Stoller over decades of trial and error. The Old Fashion Chocolate Cake, mentioned above, has been the Stoller family birthday cake for the past for 30 years.

Stoller, a mother of three and a home baker since age 12, began Bake: Dessert as a kitchen-table venture in 2001 with Karen and son, Ben West, a gourmet pastry chef.

She began selling her baked goods at the request of Ben’s friends who owned restaurants. The business quickly outgrew her Toronto home.

Now operating out of a retail space with a handful of employees, Bake: Dessert is carried by some 50 fine food retailers, caterers and restaurants in the GTA, including upscale grocers like Pusateri’s and Bruno’s Fine Foods, as well as popular eateries like Autogrill and Musa.

Bake: Dessert struck a chord because it stays true to a singular vision: to make phenomenal tasting, homemade desserts from scratch, using the best quality, gourmet ingredients.
“Every bite has to have gasp appeal,” says Stoller, adding, “That’s our benchmark.”
